MDU Riser Fiber Cables

The riser cable is the vertical backbone of an MDU network, connecting the building entrance or main distribution point with floor terminals and service zones. Its structure determines how easily fibers can be accessed, identified, spliced, and expanded as subscriber take rate grows. A cable that is difficult to open or too large for the pathway can increase labor throughout the life of the building network.

Operators should choose the cable after defining the topology and activation plan. Options include tight-buffered, loose-tube, ribbon, breakout, bend-insensitive, armored, mid-span-access, and pre-terminated constructions. Important variables include fiber count, spare-capacity strategy, OFNR, OFNP or LSZH rating, cable diameter, pulling load, bend radius, fiber identification, pathway size, and compatibility with building and floor boxes. The highest fiber count is not automatically the best choice if access and routing become difficult.
